Super Bowl Sunday Tautog

Let's start this post from the beginning.  Friday night 2/4/11, I got the call from my fishing buddy Danny Forehand.  As soon as I got his voicemail, I was ecstatic.  He was calling me to see if I would be interested in going out wreck fishing for some tautog on Dr. Ken Neill's boat, Healthy Grin, on Super Bowl Sunday.  Of course my answer was yes.  He explained to me that we would meet at his house at 4:30 AM that morning and head to his slip in Virginia Beach and go offshore from there.

We arrived that morning around 5:30 to some brisk west winds and just generally cold weather.  We loaded up the boat, fueled up and headed straight for the console wreck.  Upon arriving, we threw out the wreck anchor and let our clam baited hooks down.  First to hook up was Danny, who ended up reeling in a small cousin of the tautog, the Cunner.  Second to hook up was yours truly with my first ever Tautog.  Upon pulling him over the rail, we measured her at 14.75 inches, just over the 14 inch limit!  Needless to say, I was amped.  This would be my first ever Tog.  We continued to fish the wreck for several hours, anchoring in various locations on it.  We ended the day with 15 tautog, 1 cod and 1 cunner.  In the box coming back home with us were 3 tog and the 1 cod.  We arrived back in Virginia Beach around 4:00 PM, cleaned up the boat, cleaned the fish, and headed home to watch the Super Bowl.

All in all, we all had a great time and a beautiful day offshore.  I would like to thank Dr. Ken Neill for the opportunity to get out there and catch some fish, and Danny Forehand for letting me use one of his rods and reels for the day.

On a side note, I would like to let all my followers know that staring this Friday, I will be providing you with podcasts from various fishing icons/pros/business owners.  I have three interviews lined up so far, and will be attempting to put a new one out every Friday.  As they come, I will post a link to the podcast for your listening pleasure.

Tight lines,
Chris Story
