Kayak Kevin Podcast

Last Sunday, I was given the opportunity to sit down and interview Kevin Whitley (Kayak Kevin) on his most recent DVD and tour, "Kayak Kevin's Chesapeake Bay Tour". I had a great time talking to him and getting into his head, and the interview made for a great third podcast. You'll get to hear some of his untold stories from this and previous tours, how he trained, what it feels like to have a shark bite your kayak and a ton more.

I hope you guys enjoy it!

HRBT Sunday Striper

So, Sunday I get a call from my good friend Jason asking me if I would like to join him and Eric out at the Hampton side of the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel to try and find some catch and release schoolie striper.  Considering I hadn't been fishing in a week, I decided to go ahead and meet up with them.

Now let me start the actual trip part of the story by letting everyone know that I have never seen Jason be on time to anything...ever.  So when he said that we would meet out there at 7:30 PM, I made the mistake of getting there at 7:30.  So after waiting around, getting the kayak off of the truck, putting my waders on and all that good stuff, I finally decide that I'm going without them.  I launch the kayak to beautiful calm seas and a solid incoming tide.  I instantly head for the small boat channel on the west bound bridge and start looking to see if I can spot some fish. Nothing.  So off I go towards the island.  I get up to the island and just start drfiting and blind casting lures back down the bridge.  Once I get back to the small boat channel I see the lights on Eric and Jason's kayaks off in the distance and decide to paddle over to them and tell them what I had seen.  We shot the breeze a little and then headed back over towards the bridge.  This time I decided I would try the east bound bridge small boat channel.  I paddle up really slowly and just look around for a bit, but see nothing.  I decide that since I'm there I might as well just cast a few times to see if they might just be a little deeper.  On my third cast I feel just the slightest tick on the end of the line, and my instincts took over and I set the hook into a small 19"er.  I'm as happy as I can be at this point.  I let Jason and Eric know that I got one and then decided to cast in the same area for a bit longer.  Four casts into this I get another small tick and set the hook into a meaty 20"er.  I tried a few more spots but couldn't really find anything else out there, and decided to call it a night.

All in all it was a great short trip, calm waters, light breeze and even a few fish to boot.  Of course both fished were released strong and healthy to fight another day.

Stay tuned to the blog folks, Friday will be the next podcast and this week I have Kayak Kevin.  This one should be a great listen.

Don Lancaster Podcast!

Well friends, it's time for episode 2 of the Stuck On Fishing podcast.  Don was such a nice guy to talk to, and I'm sure I'll have him back on in the future.  Unfortunately, the editing of this one is a little weak.  Last night I went through the whole 45 minute interview with a fine tooth comb to get rid of any pauses or "uhhhhs" and then somehow managed to delete every single bit of it.  I couldn't do anything to get it back....so the second editing job was a little less edited, but still good.

Anyway, hope you guys enjoy it and make sure you listen to Don Lancaster's show "Fishing Tidewater" every Saturday from 7 - 9 AM on AM channel 1650 WHKT.

Jet Ski Brian

This past Tuesday was the first interview for the new podcast series.  For my first guest I was able to get in touch with none other than Jet Ski Brian Lockwood.  He gave me a great interview jam packed with all kinds of great information.  Obviously I had never done this before and neither had Brian, so it might be a little rough around the edges, but in time things will get better and better.

Jet Ski Brian Interview

Enjoy it everyone.  Check back this weekend for some fishing reports, it looks like we're going to have some great weather.

Super Bowl Sunday Tautog

Let's start this post from the beginning.  Friday night 2/4/11, I got the call from my fishing buddy Danny Forehand.  As soon as I got his voicemail, I was ecstatic.  He was calling me to see if I would be interested in going out wreck fishing for some tautog on Dr. Ken Neill's boat, Healthy Grin, on Super Bowl Sunday.  Of course my answer was yes.  He explained to me that we would meet at his house at 4:30 AM that morning and head to his slip in Virginia Beach and go offshore from there.

We arrived that morning around 5:30 to some brisk west winds and just generally cold weather.  We loaded up the boat, fueled up and headed straight for the console wreck.  Upon arriving, we threw out the wreck anchor and let our clam baited hooks down.  First to hook up was Danny, who ended up reeling in a small cousin of the tautog, the Cunner.  Second to hook up was yours truly with my first ever Tautog.  Upon pulling him over the rail, we measured her at 14.75 inches, just over the 14 inch limit!  Needless to say, I was amped.  This would be my first ever Tog.  We continued to fish the wreck for several hours, anchoring in various locations on it.  We ended the day with 15 tautog, 1 cod and 1 cunner.  In the box coming back home with us were 3 tog and the 1 cod.  We arrived back in Virginia Beach around 4:00 PM, cleaned up the boat, cleaned the fish, and headed home to watch the Super Bowl.

All in all, we all had a great time and a beautiful day offshore.  I would like to thank Dr. Ken Neill for the opportunity to get out there and catch some fish, and Danny Forehand for letting me use one of his rods and reels for the day.

On a side note, I would like to let all my followers know that staring this Friday, I will be providing you with podcasts from various fishing icons/pros/business owners.  I have three interviews lined up so far, and will be attempting to put a new one out every Friday.  As they come, I will post a link to the podcast for your listening pleasure.
